The Lucy House, Mason's Bend, AL

This is the Lucy house, built by Samuel Mockbee and the Rural Studio. Mockbee's designs center around very low cost designs, using recycled materials, anything that can be salvaged, or donated, and incorporating the aspect of green design (Natural Ventilation, sun path, natural water catchment, Natural heating/cooling...) in his buildings. The Lucy house was built in Masons Bend,Alabama in 2001-2002 and was made of 72,000 carpet tiles donated by Interface, one of the largest carpet tile manufacturers. The carpet tiles are held in compression by a wooden ring beam, and the structure includes a cast concrete family room that doubles as a tornado shelter.

I am particularly interested in Mockbee's work (although he is no longer with us) because he left a thriving practice, to donate his time and efforts to people in rural Mississippi who are barely living out of cardboard shacks. He saw the importance in giving back to the community, and realized that there is more to life than stockpiling money, and expensive cars. He wanted to make a difference in peoples lives, and in creating the rural studio, he has not only transformed hundreds of peoples lives, but also the towns and cities that he worked in.
